Aircon Remote Not Working? Quick Fixes
Remote stopped responding? Usually dead batteries. But if that's not it, here's what else to check.

What You Can Fix Yourself
Replace the Batteries
The most common (and most overlooked) cause. Even if the display still shows, weak batteries may not transmit a strong enough infrared signal.
1. Open the battery compartment (usually on the back)
2. Replace both batteries with fresh AAA batteries
3. Make sure the polarity (+/-) is correct
4. Test the remote
Use quality batteries — cheap batteries lose power faster in Singapore's heat.
Check the IR Sensor
The infrared (IR) sensor on your aircon's indoor unit receives signals from the remote. If it's blocked or dirty, it won't respond.
1. Locate the IR sensor on the unit (usually a small dark window on the front panel)
2. Wipe it gently with a clean dry cloth
3. Make sure nothing is blocking the line of sight between the remote and sensor
4. Stand within 5 metres when using the remote, pointing directly at the sensor
**Phone camera test:** Point your remote at your phone camera and press a button. If the remote is working, you'll see a purple/white flash through the camera (IR light is invisible to the naked eye but visible to camera sensors).
Reset the Aircon
A simple power reset can fix communication issues between the remote and the unit:
1. Turn off the aircon at the wall switch or circuit breaker
2. Wait 30 seconds
3. Turn it back on
4. Try the remote again
Some units also have a small reset button on the indoor unit — check your manual.
Use the Manual Override Button
Most aircon indoor units have a manual on/off button (usually hidden behind the front panel or on the side). This lets you use the aircon while you sort out the remote issue.
It typically runs on auto mode — you won't have full temperature control, but it works in a pinch.
Get a Universal Remote
If the remote is dead and you don't want to wait for an original replacement:
- Universal aircon remotes cost $10-$25 at hardware shops or online
- They support most brands (Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, etc.)
- Look for one with your brand code listed on the packaging
Original replacement remotes from the manufacturer cost $30-$80 depending on the brand.
When to Call a Professional
Faulty PCB Board
If the remote works (you can see IR flash on phone camera) but the aircon doesn't respond even after a reset, the PCB (printed circuit board) in the indoor unit may be faulty. The PCB processes all signals from the remote.
**Cost:** $200-$450 for PCB replacement. For older units, compare this against the cost of a new system.
When to Call a Pro
If new batteries + reset doesn't fix it and the phone camera test shows the remote IS sending a signal, the PCB may need replacement. Call a technician for diagnosis.

Keep your remote in a cool, dry spot. Heat and humidity can damage the internal electronics and battery contacts over time.
