Aircon Making Noise? Identify and Fix the Sound

What You Can Fix Yourself

Rattling or Vibrating

**Likely cause:** Loose screws, panels, or mounting brackets. **DIY fix:** 1. Turn off the aircon 2. Check the front panel — does it feel loose? Push it firmly back into place 3. Check if the unit is wobbling on its wall mount 4. Look for any visible loose screws and tighten them 5. For the outdoor unit, check if it's sitting level on its bracket and if rubber dampeners are still intact Rattling during startup that stops after a few seconds is usually normal for older units.

When to Call a Professional

Buzzing or Humming

**Likely cause:** Electrical issues, failing capacitor, or contactor problems. A slight hum is normal — your compressor and fan motor both produce some sound. But loud or new buzzing could indicate: - Loose electrical connections - Failing capacitor (common in Singapore's heat) - Contactor issues in the outdoor unit **Do not attempt electrical repairs yourself.** This requires a qualified technician.

Whistling or Hissing

**Likely cause:** Refrigerant leak, high internal pressure, or air duct issues. - **Hissing from copper pipes** = possible refrigerant leak. Turn off the unit and call a technician - **Whistling from the indoor unit** = airflow restriction, often from a very dirty filter or partially blocked vent Clean the filter first. If the whistling persists, it needs professional attention.

Grinding or Scraping

**Likely cause:** Fan blade hitting something, worn-out bearings, or debris inside the unit. **Turn off your aircon immediately** if you hear grinding — continued operation can cause serious damage. This almost always requires a technician. Common fixes include fan blade realignment, bearing replacement, or removing debris that's entered the unit.

Clicking Sounds

**Likely cause:** Normal relay switching, thermostat issues, or electrical problems. - **Clicking when the unit starts or stops** = normal. This is the relay switching on and off - **Continuous clicking** = could be a faulty thermostat or control board issue If clicking is constant and the aircon doesn't cool properly, call a professional.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional immediately if you hear grinding or scraping sounds (turn off the unit first). For persistent buzzing, hissing, or clicking that started recently, schedule a service call. Don't ignore new sounds — they usually get worse and more expensive to fix.

Maintenance Tip

During regular servicing (every 3-4 months), ask your technician to check fan motor bearings and tighten all mounting hardware. Prevention costs far less than repair.
